Ingredients
- 1 pound pork belly
- 2 boiled eggs
- 1/2 daikon (sliced)
- 1 green onion (cut into 1" pieces)
- 1 clove garlic (crushed)
- 1 tsp ginger
- Cut the pork into 1" strips and sauté until both sides are browned
- Place the pork in a sauce pan, add 2 cups of water and green onion, and boil for 30 minutes on low heat
- Remove pork and add 2 more cups of water, sugar, sake, soy sauce, garlic, and ginger, wait for the mixture to boil, then reintroduce the pork, and add daikon, boiled eggs, and cover, simmering for 2 hours on low. Stir occasionally.
- Serve pork, daikon, and eggs in a bowl with sauce from the pan
These dishes all look so exotic. I'm looking forward to trying some of them!

ReplyDeleteGreat job on this recipe - a much simpler version that the "traditional" but works great and very accessible!
ReplyDeleteTried it today and would only make a small comment / warning on the amount of soy and sugar, which can vary significantly depending on the type of sugar and the type of Soy sauce used. For instance, some types of brown sugar can be half as sweet as granulated white sugar and as you know well, the saltiness of Soy sauce in light vs dark guises can be significant.
My trick is to taste the liquid base before putting meat into it, just remember that daikon will add sweetness as well.
I am working on posting my version of this soon, it's somewhat heavily modified, but you've certainly helped me realize which ingredients are important and how to make it quickly, thanks!
